He obtained a PhD in Physics from the UAM in 1992 under the supervision of Profs. <strong>Fernando Flores<\/strong> and <strong>Alvaro Mart\u00edn Rodero<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Francisco Jos\u00e9 Garc\u00eda Vidal was a <strong>Marie-Curie Fellow<\/strong> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imperial College<\/a> (1994-1996), working in the theoretical group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/people\/j.pendry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Sir John Pendry<\/a>. After this postdoctoral stay, he has been associated with the UAM, first as an associate professor and from December 2007 as a full professor. He is the founding director (2012-2021) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifimac.uam.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Condensed Matter Physics Center &#8211; IFIMAC<\/a> at UAM, which in 2015 was recognized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/sede.mineco.gob.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness<\/a> (MINECO) as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciencia.gob.es\/site-web\/en\/Organismos-y-Centros\/Centros-y-Unidades-de-Excelencia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Excellent Research Center within the Mar\u00eda de Maeztu program<\/a>. This distinction was renewed twice, in years 2019 and 2023.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">During the last twenty-five years and thanks to the financial support from the <strong>European Union<\/strong> and the <strong>Spanish government<\/strong>, Prof. Francisco Jos\u00e9 Garc\u00eda Vidal has established a world-leading theoretical group at UAM fully dedicated to investigating the exciting possibilities of Plasmonics, Metamaterials and Nanophotonics. During this period of time, his theoretical group has collaborated with the most relevant experimental groups working in those fields. Prof. Garcia Vidal has directed <strong>more than fifteen grants<\/strong> (at both National and European levels) as Principal Investigator and was awarded with a prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/erc.europa.eu\/funding\/advanced-grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advanced Grant from the European Research Council<\/a> (ERC) in 2012.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">His theoretical group has made seminal contributions to the fields of Plasmonics, Metamaterials and Nanophotonics such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering and highly absorptive metamaterials.<\/li>\n<li>Extraordinary optical transmission through subwavelength apertures.<\/li>\n<li>The concept of spoof surface plasmons.<\/li>\n<li>Light waveguiding using surface plasmons.<\/li>\n<li>Quantum Plasmonics.<\/li>\n<li>Near-field Radiative Heat Transfer.<\/li>\n<li>Polaritonic Chemistry and Materials Science.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Prof. Francisco Jos\u00e9 Garc\u00eda Vidal has supervised <strong>16 PhD theses<\/strong> during his scientific career: 1) Pilar Fern\u00e1ndez de Pablos (2004). 2) Jorge Bravo Abad (2006). 3) Blanca Biel Ruiz (2006). 4) Antonio I. Prof. Francisco Jos\u00e9 Garc\u00eda Vidal has also supervised the postdoc work of more than 15 researchers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Prof. Francisco Jos\u00e9 Garc\u00eda Vidal has given more than <strong>100 talks<\/strong> (invited, keynote and plenary) at international conferences. He has also co-organized <strong>12 international conferences<\/strong> or workshops. He serves as reviewer of the most important journals and he was a member of the Editorial Board of New Journal of Physics from January 2009 to December 2013. From March 2017 to December 2021, Prof. Francisco Jos\u00e9 Garc\u00eda Vidal served as <strong>Divisional Associate Editor<\/strong> in the journal <strong>Physical Review Letters<\/strong> of the American Physical Society (APS) and has been recognized as an outstanding referee of the APS journals in year 2021. He was selected as <strong>fellow of the Optical Society of America<\/strong> in year 2020, was awarded by the <strong>Jaume I Prize<\/strong> in the category of Basic Research in the same year and also awarded with <strong>Blas Cabrera National prize in Physics<\/strong> in year 2021. More recently, Prof. Francisco Jos\u00e9 Garc\u00eda Vidal has been the recipient of the <strong>Miguel Catalan prize<\/strong> for Basic Research in Autonomous Community of Madrid (2024) \u00a0and the <strong>medal of the Royal Spanish Society of Physics<\/strong>\u00a0(2025).
